Taff Island, Cardiff Bay
Taff Island comprised 10 acres lying between the River Taff and Dumballs Road in the Bute Town area of Cardiff Bay. Half of it was land half of it was water!
The sites owners Ocean Developments Limited filled the site over a number of years, and working with their planning consultants and engineers, rawlins and madley were part of a team which secured an initial planning permission for light industrial and office development. Subsequently the adjoining Caradon bathroom factory was acquired, bringing the total site area up to 20 acres. A residential planning permission was secured, and on behalf of Ocean Developments rawlins and madley negotiated the sale of the site in three phases to Westbury Homes in 2002, who were subsequently taken over by Persimmon. In total the Century Wharf Development now comprises a waterfront scheme of over 942 apartments and town houses.
A number of further acquisitions took place along Dumballs Road with the former Reynold building being acquired from the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation, part of which was subsequently redeveloped as a new training centre. A further residential phase was then sold to Wimpey Homes in 2005, now part of the Taylor Wimpey Group. The scheme, known as 3D, comprised 400 units including a 13 storey landmark tower which has recently been completed.
